The passage of the18th Amendment was the product of many years ofhard work on the part on women's groups and religiousfundamentalists. The churchaffiliated Anti-SaloonLeague and theWomen's ChristianTemperance Union, whichregarded drinking as asin, pressured Congress andthe states t put the amendment across. Women's groups blamed alcohol for husbands leaving theirwives and families and for the abuse of women. As far as both groupswere concerned alcohol was an evil that destroyed the Americanfamily. By 1918 29 statesalready had adopted amendments to their state constitutionsprohibiting alcohol.
